Joon Choi
My photography begins when the intersection between the subject and myself collapse little by little and at last enter the state where we assimilate into one another. The moment I find myself assimilated into the subject is when I discover the final subject of my photography. The work is the act of seeing beyond the relationship between the subject and me which unites us as I experience the mutual bond of one’s ego and the other self, and finally lift myself up to a new state.
My major work ‘The Gilt-bronze Pensive Bodhisattva, National Treasure 83’ portrays the Buddha drawn in my mind. In order to capture the haenyeos aloof from life and death after 60 years of diving, four hours a day, holding breaths over hundred times, I dove after them into the water. Only after I shared daily lives with them was when I was able to photograph the reflection of myself in them.

나의 사진작업은 나와 대상과의 교차점이 조금씩 조금씩 무너져 내려 서로의 이입상태에 돌입한 연후에서야 비로소 이루어진다. 피사체속에 이입된 나 자신이 나의 피사체가 되는 순간이다. 피사체와 나 사이의 관계를 넘어 둘이 하나로 되는, 자아와 타아가 서로 상호환원 된 후에 나 자신을 길어내는 행위가 나의 작업방식이다.
나의 대표작이라 할 수 있는 국보83호! 금동 미륵반가사유상의 모습은 내 마음 속의 그의 모습이었고, 하루 4시간 여, 100 여 차례 숨을 이었다 놓았다 하기를 60여 년 자맥질 끝에 죽음과 삶에 초연해진 해녀들의 모습을 담기 위해서는 그녀들을 따라 공기통을 메고 물속까지 따라 들어가야 했다. 해녀들과 함께하는 삶속에서 비로소 그녀들에게 투영된 나의 모습을 담아낼 수 있었다.
